Paleokastritsa is situated on the North west coast 25 km from Corfu town. The drive can be made in a little over half an hour as the main road from town takes you there and the driving conditions are very good. Paleokastritsa itself is very spread out and is surrounded by two small peninsulas which run between six different bays. The main and most visited bay can be found at the end of the road through Paleokastritsa and there is a large car park here. From here you can swim in the crystal clear waters, due to the rocks and caves the snorkelling here is fantastic. Or you can take a boat trip to one of the sea caves. The road leading up from the end of the road takes you up to the monastery of Theotokos which dates from 1225, the road is a dead end but there is some parking however it is a lovely walk and has some wonderful views across the area. The name Paleokastritsa means old castle and it is believed that a castle once stood on the area where the monastery now is. There are plenty of bars, shops and tavernas in Paleokastritsa and it is well worth visiting some of the smaller bays and coves in the area.
