ICON is a new boutique art gallery in Corfu, Greece, that brings together artists and craftspeople from across Greece to showcase the Greek iconographic tradition and Greek heraldry.
Unlike most galleries, ICON is a gallery run by artists, for artists. Owned and curated by Dr. Sasha Chaitow, herself an artist, writer, and cultural historian, ICON functions as a collective of local artists and craftspeople aiming to highlight and promote local talent and artistic traditions in danger of dying out.
It offers a wide range of artwork, from large, fine art pieces to small icons and items for the home.
ICON specialises in Greek sacred art – icons, spiritual art, and ornaments. While a familiar sight in many Greek homes and churches, icons are often taken for granted at the expense of appreciating their long history and connection with pre-Christian traditions, their role as a living symbol of faith, but also as works of art in their own right. At ICON each painting has a story to tell, and also represents part of a long artistic tradition that should intrigue any art-lover.
ICON also specialises in heraldry, which is closely interconnected with Corfu’s artistic tradition. Acclaimed heraldic artist Ioannis Vlazakis creates heraldic crests on commission, after careful historical research to ensure accuracy. Samples of his work can be found in-store, along with several other items that have been created using traditional materials and techniques.
All ICON’s signature items are proudly handmade in Greece, and can be found in private collections worldwide.
ICON’s special collections include a number of select antiques, from 6th century Byzantine crosses and medieval jewellery, to vintage carvings and prints.
